More photos of St. Croix, #13.

I was trying to post the photos by year so that the pages would run in some kind of date order.
However, every time I go through an old album and find photos I decide to post, it means I
have to rename  all the pages.  That takes "mucho tiempo" (much time).  So, for now I will
name the pages consecutively though the years the photos were taken may not be in any
particular order.  Date the photos were taken will be indicated whenever possible.

I lived on in Frederiksted through June 1960.   1988
The pillar at the site where the Montpellier Chapel, Our
Lady of Perpetual Help, was located.  Was part of the
staircase.  See
St. Croix 8 for a picture of chapel. Updated
photos at
St. Croix 30. Yearly, we walked to the chapel.
Baron Spot - For those of you who may not remember
what was in the area before the mini mall (Village Mall).
We'd stop here for drinks on our way to/from Christiansted.

Did you know that Fort Christiansvaern was once red?  At the left, you can see it when it was red and at right the
yellow fort as it now exists.  The photo at left was taken in 1982.  The photo at right is a postcard,
(c) Susanna Vance.  The fort in Frederiksted is still red.

Picking guavas in the field on the other side of Carambola Golf Course.
In a guavaberry tree.  Mind you, the trees are thin and are found on the side
of hills (cliffs).  I think we found this tree as we traveled the Scenic Road.

I have expanded
this photo to
give you a
better look at the
berries.  They
are small
and purple,
almost black, in
color.  They can
be found in
December and
are used in
ice-cream, tarts,
and jam for
the famous
Vienna Cake (a
special layered
cake
made during
the Christmas
holidays).  The
berries
are also used
to make the
famous
Guavaberry, a
delicious liqueur.
